VDD seeks criminal prosecution of two persons for espionage on behalf of Russia

On 21 October, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) asked the Prosecution Office to initiate criminal prosecution of two persons for collection non-disclosable information with the aim of transferring it to Russian Federation.

VDD initiated the criminal case against the persons on 2 May 2024 pursuant to Section 85 Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Law, namely for collecting non-disclosable information for the purpose of transferring it to a foreign state or foreign organization, either directly or through mediation of another person. Within this criminal case, VDD has conducted criminal proceedings on several sites in Riga and its vicinity.

According to information obtained by VDD during the investigation, the persons were illegally collecting and transferring to Russian Federation non-disclosable information about other persons who are suspected of espionage in Latvia and have been placed in custody. 

One of the two persons VDD is seeking criminal prosecution of is a Latvian citizen, who has already previously been accused of espionage on behalf of Russia. As for the second person, until now no other criminal case had been initiated by VDD against the person.

Both suspects have been applied the security measure – arrest.
