VDD detains individual for suspected espionage of Latvian military objects

On 27 August 2025, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) detained a person on the suspicion of deliberately and unlawfully collecting information about Latvian military objects and passing this information on to a Russian intelligence and security service.

During the investigation, VDD established that a Latvian citizen has provided information to a Russian intelligence and security service about the locations, plans, and security measures of several Latvian military objects. The detainee has also provided the Russian intelligence and security service with information about construction of new military objects, training exercises and the presence of other NATO member states’ troops in specific Latvian military objects. According to information at VDD’s disposal, the male has also shared other information with the Russian intelligence and security service which could be used against the national security interests of Latvia and other Baltic region states.

VDD initiated criminal case on 21 August 2025 pursuant to Section 85 Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Law, namely, for the illegal collecting of non-disclosable information for the purposes of transferring it to a foreign intelligence service on its behalf.

VDD has conducted procedural activities at four sites in Riga and its vicinity connected to the individual. The Service is currently conducting an in-depth analysis of the data mediums and documents seized during the search.

The suspect has been taken into custody as a security measure.

VDD continues its investigation and will provide additional information according to the course of the criminal proceedings.
