VDD detains two persons on suspicion of collecting and transferring information to Russia’s intelligence and security services

On 13 May, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) detained two persons on suspicion of collecting non-disclosable information with the aim of transferring it to Russia’s intelligence and security services.

The criminal case against these persons was initiated on 2 May pursuant to Section 85 Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Law, i.e., illegal collecting of non-disclosable information for the purposes of transferring it to a foreign state or foreign organisation either directly or through mediation of another person. Within the criminal case, VDD has carried out criminal proceedings at several sites in Riga and its surroundings.

According to the information obtained by VDD during the investigation, the persons were illegally collecting and transferring non-disclosable information to Russia’s intelligence and security services about other persons who are suspected of espionage in Latvia and who have been applied the security measure – arrest.  

One of the detained persons is Sergejs Sidorovs, who has already been accused of spying for Russia.

On 15 May, the two suspects were applied the security measure – arrest.  VDD is continuing the investigation and will provide additional information about its course according to the progress of the criminal case.

VDD reminds that no person is considered guilty until their guilt is proven in accordance to the law.
