VDD detains person for funding Russian armed forces

On 5 August 2026, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) detained a person on suspicion of providing funding to the Russian armed forces to continue military action against Ukraine.

The criminal case was initiated on 12 February 2025 pursuant to Section 772 of the Criminal Law, namely, for financing of an armed conflict.

During the investigation, VDD established that the detained Russian citizen, who has been residing in Latvia for several years, since Russia’s invasion in Ukraine had responded to several calls published in the internet environment to provide financial or material support to ensure the warfare against Ukraine by making regular money transfers to support the Russian armed forces.

Within the criminal case, a person who was involved in collecting financial and other material resources in support of the Russian armed forces was also detained on 14 May 2026. The investigation revealed that the detained Latvian non-citizen transferred the donated funds from her bank account to Russia.
