On 17 December 2025, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) detained a known Russia’s compatriot policy activist in Latvia on the suspicion of violating the European Union (EU) sanctions by providing publications for a Russian propaganda resource.
VDD initiated the criminal case against the Latvian national on 26 November 2025 after discovering publications created by the individual on a Russian propaganda website managed by a foundation included in the EU’s list of international sanctions. The criminal case was initiated pursuant to Section 84 Paragraph 1, i.e., for the violation of the EU sanctions. Additionally, the publications created by this individual contained narratives supporting Russia’s interests.
VDD underlines that the provision of any resources to a subject under the EU sanctions is considered a violation of the EU sanctions.
VDD has conducted criminal procedural activities at two sites in Jelgava connected to the individual. The Service is currently conducting an in-depth analysis of the data mediums and documents seized during the search.
The suspect has been taken into custody as a security measure.
VDD will provide additional information about the progress of the investigation according to the course of the criminal case.
