VDD calls for criminal prosecution against a person for the denial of the fact of the occupation of Latvia

On 11 November 2019 VDD proposed to initiate criminal prosecution against Latvian citizen for the public denial of the occupation of the Republic of Latvia and for the praising of war crimes committed by the USSR.

The person published "greetings" on the national commemoration day in personal Facebook profile on 17 June 2019, which is the Occupation of the Republic of Latvia Day. In the opinion of VDD, the person, by selectively choosing historical events and interpreting them according to personal interests, denies the occupation of the Republic of Latvia on 17 June 1940 by the USSR and interprets this tragic event as beneficial for the inhabitants of Latvia.

VDD initiated Criminal proceedings against the above mentioned person on 25 June 2019 pursuant to the Section 74.1 of the Criminal Law about public glorification, denial and justification of the war crime committed by the USSR against the Republic of Latvia and its inhabitants.

VDD has referred the criminal case to the Riga Judicial Region Prosecution Office and proposed to initiate criminal prosecution against the person. At the moment VDD refrains from further comments on this case.

VDD recalls that no person shall be considered guilty until the guilt of such person has been determined in accordance with the procedures laid down in the law.
