On 10 August 2026, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) asked the Prosecution Office to initiate criminal prosecution against a Latvian non-citizen for expressing support towards ideas directed against the territorial integrity of Latvia.
During the investigation, VDD established that the person regularly expressed support on "TikTok" towards the idea of Daugavpils separating from Latvia by establishing a new republic. In addition, the individual further disseminated this idea by sharing such content on several "TikTok" accounts.
The "TikTok" account which initially published posts popularising the ideas of Daugavpils’ separatism has been deleted at VDD’s request.
VDD incriminates the suspect with the commission of crimes stipulated in Section 81 Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Law, i.e., disseminating materials containing public invitation to take action against the territorial integrity of the Republic of Latvia in a manner not provided for in the Constitution.
VDD detained the suspect on 12 May 2026. The suspect remains in custody as a security measure.
VDD reminds that no person shall be considered guilty until the guilt of such person has been determined in accordance with the procedures laid down in law.
