Latvian citizen who served in Russia’s armed forces detained for illegal border crossing

On Monday, 7 October, in Šķilbēni parish, the State Border Guard officers detained a Latvian citizen, who was illegally crossing Latvian border from Russia. Following investigation in cooperation with Latvian State Security Service (VDD), it was established that this man served in the armed forces of aggressor state Russia.

State Border Guard has initiated a criminal case against the perpetrator pursuant to Section 284 Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Law, i.e., for intentional illegal crossing of the external State border.

In turn, VDD has initiated a criminal case against the person pursuant to Section 951 of the Criminal Law, namely for violation of the prohibition to serve in Russia’s armed forces as prescribed by the National Security Law. According to the information at the disposal of VDD, the person concluded the military service contract with Russia’s armed forces.

The investigation is currently ongoing and services will provide additional information about its course according to the progress of the criminal cases.

Services reiterate that no person is considered guilty until their guilt is proven in accordance to the law.
