VDD initiates criminal prosecution against a person for training for terrorism and purchasing explosives

On 2 September 2024, Latvian State Security Service (VDD) urged the Prosecution Office to initiate criminal prosecution against a Latvian non-citizen for obtaining instructions and knowledge of terrorist attacks, as well as the purchase and storage of explosives and gun ammunition.

Criminal prosecution is initiated pursuant to Section 794 Paragraph 1 and Section 233 Paragraph 2 of the Criminal Law.

The suspect was arrested by VDD on 2 May this year. During a search at the person's place of residence, more than 400 grams of the explosive TNT, gun ammunition, as well as a package with sulfuric acid were seized. In addition, materials glorifying terrorist activities and containing calls to carry out such activities were found at the person's place of residence. The person had also accumulated detailed instructions for carrying out terrorist attacks, including making explosive devices.

VDD’s investigation found that the person supports the ideology of the terrorist group Daesh. The Service found that the person was intensively involved in correspondence with groups supporting extremism and terrorism on the communication platform "Telegram", where he shared ideological materials of terrorist organizations, as well as various instructions for committing terrorist acts.

The suspect has been remanded in custody as a security measure.
